1. Install the Adaptive.js SDK

The Adaptive.js SDK is built on open source technologies. Install the SDK only once per computer.

Follow these steps to install the SDK.

Component Installation Troubleshooting Each of the following tutorial steps leads to a software download site. Refer to the support section of each site for any installation questions.

1. Install Node.js

Node.js is a tool which runs server and network applications on your computer. The NPM package installer comes as part of Node.js.

Download Node.js

2. Install Git

Git is a software version control system that manages Bower dependencies.

Download Git

Windows: PATH Windows users must adjust the PATH variable to allow Git and UNIX tools in the Windows Command Prompt.

Verify the Git installation.

1. Open a new Terminal (Mac) or Command Prompt (Windows).

2. To check that Git has installed properly, enter the following command on the command line:

git --version

3. Install Ruby

By default, we use Sass as our CSS preprocessor which requires Ruby. Most Mac OS and Linux distributions come with Ruby already installed.

Check if you already have Ruby.

1. To check if your computer has Ruby, enter the following command on the command line:

ruby --version

2. If the previous command returns an error, download and install Ruby.

4. Install Bundler

After you install Ruby, install Bundler on the command line. Bundler manages Sass dependencies.

gem install bundler

Or if you need administrative privileges, precede the command with sudo as follows:

sudo gem install bundler

5. Install Grunt

Grunt is a JavaScript task runner which automates common tasks for you, such as compilation and test running. It runs your Adaptive.js projects.

npm install -g grunt-cli

Or if you need administrative privileges, precede the command with sudo as follows:

sudo npm install -g grunt-cli

6. Install the Adaptive.js Framework

The Adaptive.js framework consists of the scaffold generator, Adaptive.js libraries, and some open source tools.

npm install -g generator-adaptivejs

Or if you need administrative privileges, precede the command with sudo as follows:

sudo npm install -g generator-adaptivejs
